Back in the day, people used to craft messages longhand and wait days for them to be read. But not anymore because of optical communication, and a message can zoom through fiber glasses at super speed! Isn't that cool? Let’s explore that amazing technology and the ways it has altered the way we speak to one another.

Many centuries ago, long before single mode optical fiber was possible, people sent messages over long distances by using loud drums, carrier pigeons, and even smoke signals until the smoke is consider to reach enough high to be visible. Just imagine having to wait for days or even weeks to receive an answer! It’s hard to even imagine, isn’t it?

How Optical Communication Revolutionized Data Transmission

In the 1960s, researchers began to tinker with the idea of using light to communicate information. They discovered that light could travel far faster than old techniques allowed. This is how optical communication got its start. By the 1980s, glass fibers had begun to be used to send data long distances, forever changing the way we communicate.

The way we used light to communicate made it very easy to transmit things very quickly. Optical fibers could transport data at the speed of light, instead of sluggish copper wires. That would allow for messages to be sent nearly instantaneously! This work paved the way for the internet, video calls and other awesome things we use daily.
